It's just about opening day for the 2025 Ilwaco season of Spring and Summer fun!
The first Saturday in May holds many annual traditions for Ilwaco, including opening day for the Ilwaco Saturday Market, the Ilwaco Children's Parade and the Ilwaco Charter Association's annual “Blessing of the Fleet”.
The Ilwaco Saturday Market opens at 10 am and closes at 4pm. In addition to artists and other vendors, the market hosts it's “Community Living Room” at the Port of Ilwaco pavilion and a “Neighborhood Backyard” for games and activites. The “Community Living Room” is in it's second year and is a space for various local non profits, musicians and other artists to utilize the space for performing, activities and other community programs. The Ilwaco Timberland Library will be there for opening day.
The Ilwaco Merchants Association's “Ilwaco Children's Parade” starts at noon and runs westbound along Howerton Way; starting near Coho Charters with the parade route ending downtown at First/ Lake Street. No pre-registration is required and you may enter the parade on the same day of the event. Not just for kids, the parade is open to all family friendly and non political entries. Held in conjunction with Loyalty Days weekend, the theme is patriotic. Awards for best bike, best float and most patriotic (among others) are awarded and there are goody bags for the kids.
A tradition for over 46 years, the Ilwaco Charter Association's “Blessing of the Fleet” is held at 2:30 pm. Participants may join a participating charter boat. There is no fee, space is limited and guests are welcome on a first come, first serve basis. Other vessels are welcome to join the Blessing of the Fleet procession. Traditions of the Blessing include the Coast Guard dropping a wreath from their helicopter while a prayer is said over the radio for our local fisherman. Each boat brings flowers and drops those in the water as well.
